TAFE WESTERN SYDNEY INSTITUTE BUSINESS PARTNERS PAGE 13 ratio within our childcare centre,” Floryn says. Caitlin Smith is a Business Administration Trainee who assists Floryn in the Children’s Services unit. As part of her 12 month training program, she undertakes work responsibilities just like every other staff member. Her tasks are integrated with a formal mentoring program where Caitlin rotates amongst other departments, to round out her understanding of Council operations. This is combined with formal training at WSI which gives Caitlin the opportunity to share her learning with other students who are also attaining a Certificate III in Business Administration. The end result is a well rounded worker who brings true value to her employer, with the right combination of practical skills and formal training. Floryn is very impressed with the training WSI provides. “WSI has a good reputation. They provide high quality services and they have very high expectations of the students. I think that’s why our program has been so successful. “WSI is always willing to provide solutions to any issues which arise and that’s what makes it such a good relationship. Their number one priority is to meet our needs,” Floryn says. TAFE provides training for Council staff across the full range of work experience – from school leavers, to those returning to work after long absences and for upskilling their long term employees. Whitney Rousham, Director of Business for TAFE Western Sydney Institute, says that WSI is able to supply Council with training in a broad range of services. “We have 3,500 people who work for our institute and who come from a huge range of industry backgrounds,” Whitney says. “If you think about the range of services Council provides, it frequently requires training for those staff. We provide Council with training in business administration, information technology, hospitality, construction, horticulture, children’s services, food safety and more. We have the experience, and the award winning service, to cater to their needs. “It’s not just a question of being big and faceless, it’s a question of being good, and human – and I reckon that’s what we are.” Caitlin Smith, “A traineeship is the best thing you can do when you leave school” The end result is a well rounded worker who brings true value to her employer, with the right combination of practical skills and formal training.
